wide and slim - our analog collaborator

reto wide and slim camera review: black slim devil

writing this review has been a long time coming, as the reto wide and slim camera holds a special place in our photography journey, we’ve been using an iteration of this camera for over a decade at jobs and for personal work. We explore why it's more than just a camera to us:

simplicity: its simplicity is its most exiting feature. in a world where complexity rules, its straightforward design allows us to focus on capturing moments, gesture, and nuance. Letting us shut our brain off and react to moments unfolding.

always by our side: the reto is a companion on every job. its compact size ensures it never gets left behind, making it an integral part of our photographic tools. We’ve made some of our favorite wedding images on this little plastic hero.

a niche gem: while it has its limitations, we appreciate the reto as a niche tool. it is never our primary camera, but it's undoubtedly the best complement to our photo bag.

beyond gear: using the reto has taught us that photography is about vision and storytelling. tools are just tools, and the reto wide and slim exemplifies this well.

unique aesthetic: its lens adds a distinct character to every image. its imperfections and ethereal glow are irreplaceable.

  • what features?: The reto’s limitations are part of its charm, we think the limitations push us outside the box while shooting.

  • lens: fixed 22mm wide-angle lens

  • aperture: fixed aperture for effortless shooting at f/11

  • shutter speed: fixed shutter speed for seamless operation at 1/125th

  • focus: fixed focus, no need for adjustments

  • film format: standard 35mm film compatibility

  • viewfinder: features a basic reverse Galilean viewfinder, which is a type of optical viewfinder commonly found in compact film cameras.

  • flash: no flash

  • construction: lightweight plastic body for portability

  • dimensions: approximately 4.3 x 2.6 x 1.2 inches (110 x 65 x 30 mm)

  • weight: typically around 3.5 ounces (100 grams) without film

comparison with others: the reto shares similarities with other popular models like the vivitar ultra wide and slim and the superheadz black slim devil. they are most likely the exact same cameras as far as we can tell.

final thoughts: there's no reason not to own one of these plastic heroes if you love 35mm. shoot, have fun, experiment – and let the magic of analog unfold.
